PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGES
To some viewers a photograph is a representation of something material or real and to create an abstract upsets their idea of what a photograph should be. There have been, however, many distinguished forays in the direction of abstract images, starting with Schadographs and Rayographs in the 1920s and continuing to this day with photograms.
I have created my images by taking a photograph - usually a studio shot but not always - and experimenting with it on the computer. The computer and the digital camera certainly speed up the process of experimentation.
The photograph influences the structure as well as the shapes and colours. These are the aspects of the image that most appeal to me. Music is another influence. Often the exploration leads nowhere, but occasionally a fleeting vision has a new structure and a new reality. This seems to be an experimental field with limitless possibilities.
I have been rewarded by the reaction of viewers. Whereas depicting “real” subjects may produce an obvious or intended reaction – usually for this reason more transient – showing abstract subjects may often produce an unexpected one. Showing my images has stimulated a range of emotional responses. For this reason I have called the series Interaction. I have been most encouraged by the the fact that my images have resonated with a diverse cross section of viewers.
