CLIVE ROWEPHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGESTo some viewers a photograph is a representation of something material or real and to create an abstract upsets their idea of what a photograph should be. There have been, however, many distinguished forays in the direction of abstract images, starting with Schadographs and Rayographs in the 1920s and continuing to this day with photograms. I have created my images by taking a photograph - usually a studio shot but not always - and manipulating it on the computer. I have viewed the two processes as one. The photograph influences the structure as well as the shapes and colours. Recently I have used Autodesk 3dsMax to create novel shapes. It is difficult to say what the influence or motivation is behind a particular image. I think it is possible to communicate through abstract images. The colours and shapes inevitably will trigger some reaction even with a viewer not claiming to enjoy abstraction. Music is an influence behind some of the images. Images I have enjoyed in public galleries have certainly had a subliminal influence. I am intrigued by one form of abstraction linking up with another. While I have not deserted photography entirely, I do enjoy the creative freedom that the dual process offers.I have certainly been rewarded by the reaction of viewers. Whereas depicting “real” subjects may produce an obvious or intended reaction – usually for this reason more transient – showing abstract subjects may often produce an unexpected one. Showing my images has stimulated a range of emotional responses. For this reason I have called the series Interaction. I have been most encouraged by the the fact that my images have resonated with a diverse cross section of viewers. All rights in the images and their use are reserved to the copyright owner. Each image is copyright Clive Rowe
